As well as writing short stories, I also enjoy writing poetry and find that it is a way to express what is on my mind, the environment around me and any topic I wish to explore at the time. Below I have included a few poems that I have written in the past year through both joyful and challenging times each with a written explanation. I would love to know what you think!
City life The darkest days lit up by the city lights, Sleep no more, they eradicate. For in a city you are never alone, Strangers passing, filled with their own.. Fleeting thoughts, not everyone knows they exist Frustration, Joy, Intensity Some may connect with the eye Some with a smile Some may pass another again Some may never know What lies is in the universe's intent. © copyright of Emily Jackson,2021
The poem ‘City life’ explores the concept of living in a city- the feeling of overwhelm but also the joyous feeling of never feeling alone. Despite the fleeting contact and connection with strangers passing by, it does not underestimate the impact it can have on how one feels. One can feel completely alone and isolated within four walls but as soon as they step out into city life this difficult feeling can instantly feel reduced. Never underestimate the impact of human connection, no matter how fleeting.
To be present The here, The now, Is all there ever is, Surrender to the past It is not now that it lives. For it has lived through you, So do not let it live on in you, For what lives is right now, What do you see, truly without interpretation? The rush of wind through your hair, The tear that runs down your cheek, The intense emotion that builds up, Alive with life. At one-with all there is At one with the life that's right here. © copyright of Emily Jackson,2021
The poem above ‘To be present’ explores the importance of being present throughout life. Too often we are trying to find forms of escapism through TV, film, social media platforms, mobile phones that we miss the beauty of life, living in the moment and facing what we need to feel. Sometimes we need to check in with ourselves- our body and mind and live fully present instead of through distraction.
Through the motions For if we remain entangled within it, We will only be forever stuck, Through the motions we must follow, To expect elimination of difficult emotion is, Ignorance, To not, finds us bliss, To feel is to live fully, So invite what is meant to be, For it too shall pass. © copyright of Emily Jackson,2021
Certain feelings come with a connotation of negativity or labelled as ‘bad’. So much so that we try to run away from them or find distraction to help suppress what is trying to come up. Yet all emotions whether ‘good’ or ‘bad’ is perfectly natural and part of being human. To expect the emotions to just suddenly go away is not realistic or achievable if we are not willing to sit with what is difficult. To feel all kinds of emotions is to feel and live fully. We must sit with what is here in the moment, recognise what comes up in us and remember that it too shall pass, we just need to accept it.
